The Makeup lessons everyone should know

Great makeup isn't about owning endless products or following every trend. It's about understanding a few techniques that help you look polished, confident and like the very best version of yourself.

Whether you love a full glamorous look or prefer minimal makeup, mastering the basics can completely transform the way your makeup looks and feels.

Here are the makeup lessons everyone should know -

Great makeup always starts with skin -

No foundation can compete with dry, dehydrated or dull skin. Smooth, healthy looking skin creates the best canvas for makeup to be effective and beautiful. This was one of the reasons why I blend and make my own Organic TLC facial elixir oil - read about it here - https://tinabrocklebank.co.uk/who-is-ready-for-a-bit-of-tlc-tina-loving-care/

Before applying anything, cleanse, acid tone and moisturise according to how your skin looks and feels on that day. Allow skincare to settle for a few minutes. If your skin is dry, choose a richer moisturiser, if oily, opt for lightweight moisture rather than skipping it altogether.

When skin is balanced, makeup sits better, lasts longer and looks far more natural.

Foundation should match your skin - not change it -

Foundation should even out tone, not mask your skin completely. One of the most common mistakes is choosing a shade too dark, too pale, too orange or too heavy.

Test foundation along the jawline in natural daylight. The right shade should disappear without blending.

Remember, coverage is personal. Some people love a tinted moisturiser others prefer medium or full coverage. The best foundation is the one that makes your skin look like skin and makes you look and feel great.

Less product often looks better

Applying more makeup rarely creates a better result, too much product can settle into any fine lines, emphasise texture and look like makeup, (which isn't the aim).

Use thin layers and build gradually. Start with less concealer, less powder and less blush than you think you need. You can always add more, but taking away excess is harder.

Brows frame the face

Well-groomed brows can lift and define the entire face. They don't need to be dramatic or overly sculpted, otherwise you risk them dominating the face.

Focus on brushing brows upwards, softly filling sparse areas and keeping the shape and shade of the product natural. Don't opt for anything too dark, lighter is always best. Avoid harsh, blocky lines. Brows should enhance your features, not overpower them.

Blending is everything

Even the most expensive products won't look good if they aren't blended properly. It's best to apply with fingers first, (as they are warm and avoids wasting the product in a sponge or brush), then use the sponge/brush to blend it gently.

Blend foundation upwards into the hairline, soften blush edges, diffuse eyeshadow and make sure bronzer melts into the skin with no harsh edges. Good blending creates that seamless, professional finish that everyone wants.

Placement changes everything

Where you apply makeup can completely alter the effect. Blush placed slightly higher can lift the face. bronzer around the perimeter adds warmth and dimension. Highlight on cheekbones catches the light beautifully. Concealer only where needed looks fresher than large triangles under the eyes.

Technique matters just as much as product.

Powder only where you need it

Many people over-powder the skin, which can leave makeup looking flat or dry. Instead, lightly powder areas prone to shine, such as down the t-zone, sides of nose and chin. Leave the rest of the skin with a little natural glow. Fresh skin always looks more modern than overly matte skin.

Eye makeup doesn't need to be complicated

You do not need five eyeshadows and cut creases for beautiful eye makeup. A soft neutral eyeshadow, definition at the lash line, curled lashes and mascara can open the eyes instantly. Simplicity is the most flattering option.

Lip colour finishes the look

Even minimal makeup looks polished with a lip colour. Whether it's balm, nude, rose or bold red. The right tone of lip colour and texture brings everything together.

If lipstick fades quickly, lightly line the lips first or apply in thin layers and blot between coats.

Confidence is the best beauty product

The most beautiful makeup always comes with confidence. Trends change constantly, but knowing what suits you never goes out of style. As the great Karl Lagerfeld once said, "Trendy is the last stage before tacky".

Use makeup to enhance, express and enjoy - not to hide.

Final thoughts

Makeup should feel empowering, not confusing. When you understand the basics - skin prep, shade matching, blending, placement and restraint - everything becomes easier and more enjoyable.

You don't need hundreds of products or hours in front of the mirror. You simply need the right makeup, tools, a bit of knowledge and practise and you will be well away, because the best makeup isn't about perfection, its about feeling your best self.

Make-up artist shenanigans...

Thank you to all who have signed up for e-mails.  I have been very busy booking some of you in for the discounted make-up lessons, and also doing the lessons too.

Don't forget these need to be booked in before the 21st of December, and as long as they are done before the 29th of March 2019, that is fine, as then I will be busy with wedding make-up and trials.

As this has been so successful, there is now very limited availability for this promotion, so when they are gone they are gone and lessons will go back to the original price of £150!  I also offer Gift vouchers too, so will make a lovely gift, and these have been hugely popular too.  For those of you who have contacted me to say you would like to book in but haven't paid yet, just to remind you, I cannot hold any appointments without the deposit, so if I haven't got this, then I am afraid the appointment suggested will not be honoured and be given to someone else.

Just to update you on what I have been getting up to - I have been keeping busy with a lot of make-up lessons and quite a few weddings still too, I have even got wedding bookings right up to December, so I have still been doing lots of make-up trials and then obviously I do these 3 months before the actual wedding day, so for Spring weddings I have been doing a few too.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Samantha on her make-up lesson, and I showed her a variety of looks, (this is not the "standard" lesson by the way.)

I will show the other looks on my before and after page!  I was inspired by one of my favourite make-up books by Keyvn Aucoin, The art of make-up.

I was honoured to be selected as one of the top wedding Make-up artists in the U.K here is the link - https://www.gohen.com/blog/uks-top-50-wedding-make-up-artists-2018/6/

"Tina's ethos is "less is more" and "why would you want to look like anyone else?" It is on that basis that she helps highlight her Brides' true beauty without hiding a Bride under layers of make-up.  This has served Tina and her hundreds of Brides well, and her glowing reviews are testament to her fab service!"

I will be hopefully uploading more blog posts soon so I hope you won't mind, although, please bear with me! x

The beautiful Babs.

Make-up lesson loyalty scheme...

Thank you to everyone who has signed up for e-mails!

I promise not to bombard you constantly with emails! (I am aiming probably once a month but it will probably more like two months!)

I have a list of all who have subscribed so far.  I am calling this my Loyalty scheme.

This means they can then apply for a £30 discount for a make-up lesson! (usually priced at £150, so the lesson in total will be £120.)  This is for a limited period of time only and I only have a limited number of lessons I can offer for this promotion, so when they are gone, they are gone!

You can still subscribe to be eligible, but this offer will end on the 21st of December 2018.  Should you have a problem subscribing, please just fill in an enquiry form via my website, (under Contact me) or email me - tina@tinabrocklebank.co.uk with all of the details below -

Name, telephone number, address, a brief description of what makeup lesson you are after, (e.g, day makeup) and roughly when you would like the lesson, (don't worry if you don't know at this stage.)  I will send you my bank details to pay via BACS.

Once I have checked you have subscribed, you can then go on to pay your £120, (please remember to use your name as reference.)  I will email you to confirm.

Please note, this cannot be used towards any other service such as special occasion makeup or Bridal/wedding makeup.

Once you have paid, then you will need to contact me to arrange your lesson, this needs to be booked in before the 21st of December 2018.  This means the lesson has to be done no later than the 29th of March 2019.

If someone you know has been harping on about a lesson with me, then this is the time to buy it! (especially with Christmas only 4 months away, can you believe that!?)  If you would like this as a present, then I can send out one of my make-up lesson vouchers so they have it in time for then.

I have provided hundreds of lessons for ladies over the years, of all ages and ethniticies, teenagers to ladies in their 90's. I love helping people to not only look their best, but feel their best.

A 1 hour bespoke make-up lesson with me at my studio includes the following -

The lesson begins with a chat about what exactly you require from the session and what kind of makeup look you are after.  I can then adapt the lesson to your requirements and needs.  Your photo is then taken, (usually with your own make-up on).  Tina then discusses skincare and will advise on the best skincare for you and your make-up.  Skin prep is so important!

I then go through each step, from foundation to lipstick.  It is a really fun session and you can ask as many questions as you like throughout the lesson.

At the end of the lesson, your photo will be taken again with your make-up applied by me. You will also be given a personalised face chart and product list so you can go online and order anything you like that I have recommended or used.

I will then email you your before and after photograph together with your make-up procedure so you can practise your make-up at home.  (*Please note, there is no pressure to have your photo on social media and I respect your wishes if you decide not.)

I look forward to hearing from you! I have my make-up brushes and kit all ready and raring to go! x

Make-up by Tina Brocklebank

Make-up lessons...

I work with so many lovely ladies and it really is an honour to be able to help someone look and feel their best, (yes, it sounds cheesy but I mean it!) Its such a confidence boost when not only do you look good, but you FEEL good! the 2 go hand in hand! I know all too well! If I don't wear any make-up, I do feel quite low! make-up is such a powerful tool and when used correctly, it can not only transform your face but your mood too!

Today I worked with Emma, a beautiful lady without make-up granted.  Emma wanted to be shown how to update her make-up, to use the right make-up and how to choose it.  I also took her out of her comfort zone a bit and played with different shades a bit...after all, make-up is there to experiment with!

Its all about making the best of what you have, playing up the good and not focusing on what you don't like - a bit like life in general really!

Here's Emma, looking beautiful before make-up and I believe, even more beautiful after...I think you will agree, she looks fresh, healthy, glowing, natural and more importantly, still like herself...

Please see my section on make-up lessons for information.
